There’s something about January that makes you pause.
Maybe it’s the quiet that finally arrives after the holidays — the last ornament boxed up, the family gatherings wrapped, the peppermint bark mysteriously disappearing from the pantry. Or maybe it’s the unmistakable energy that pulses through a new calendar, like the world is offering us another chance. A clean slate. A deep breath. A whispered invitation:
“Start again.”
At BOOM!, we know that for the 50+ crowd, January isn’t about chasing six-pack abs or trying to impress the internet with your word-for-the-year. It’s about intention. Energy. Reconnection. And most of all, remembering that life didn’t peak in our 30s. It’s happening now — and we get to choose how we show up for it.
That’s why I can’t imagine a better cover story to begin this year than our interview with Katrina Shaw — fitness innovator, faith-filled encourager, and grandmother of eight who still throws cheerleader toe-touches on her birthday. At 63, Katrina’s story is the reminder we all need: that movement is medicine, joy is a choice, and aging is not about slowing down — it’s about staying engaged, connected, and strong in body, mind, and spirit.
She says it best herself: “You have to begin if you ever want to finish.” That’s true of fitness, yes — but it’s true of anything worth doing: reconnecting with old friends, changing your eating habits, learning a new skill, or finally making time to do what fuels your soul. Starting small is still starting. And momentum, once it builds, is a powerful thing.
This month’s issue is packed with practical ways to start well. Whether it’s Beating the Winter Blues in the River Region — our guide to staying active and joyful even when the days are shorter — or the candid and funny Grumpy but Grateful take on New Year’s resolutions (“Calm down, Carol…”), there’s wisdom on every page for building a better rhythm this season.
And if you’re someone who’s made resolutions in the past and watched them fade by “Quitter’s Day” (yep, that’s apparently January 17th), don’t miss our Intentions Guide inside. It’s a no-nonsense, totally doable breakdown of how to set goals that actually stick — built not on shame or guilt, but on small, sustainable change and emotional clarity.
One more shoutout while we’re talking about movement and motivation: we’re proud to have so many local businesses and organizations in our community that make wellness possible. From faith-driven fitness leaders like Katrina to nonprofits doing meaningful work, Boom is honored to partner with people who help us live fuller lives.
As we turn the page into a new year, maybe the real question isn’t “What should I do?” but rather “Who do I want to become?” Stronger? More connected? More joyful? You’re not too late. You’re not too old. And you’re definitely not alone.
Here’s to movement, momentum, and starting again — in whatever way that looks for you.Let’s make it a good year.
